What Does Child Poverty Look like today?
Poverty among children is disturbing in its effects and presents one of the most urgent challenges for our society today. In the recent years though, the number of people living in poverty; including children has reduced. The World Bank finds that the percentage of people living in extreme poverty globally fell to a new low of 10 percent in 2015, down from 11 percent in 2013. This is reflecting a steady but slowing progress. The number of people living on less than $1.90 a day fell during this period by 68 million to 736 million.
Statistics however show that half of the World’s poor are children. According to estimates from the 2018 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), in 104 primarily low and middle-income countries, 662 million children are considered multidimensionally poor. In 35 countries half of all children are poor.
- 3.4 million people, mostly children die annually from water related diseases
- 3.1 million children die from undernutrition each year
- 640 million children (1 in 3) live without adequate shelter
- 270 million children (1 in 7) have no access to health services
- Worldwide, there are still more than 150 million children who do not have access to pre primary education
These figures are devastating, yes. But together, we can join hands and take action to eradicate Child Poverty. The Sustainable Development Goals for instance provide an explicit commitment worldwide towards eradicating child poverty. Target 1.2 in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 (End Poverty in all its forms Everywhere) on the eradication of poverty calls for the eradication of poverty in all its forms for individuals of all ages, making the elimination of child poverty “a universal commitment as well as an urgent global priority.
There is evidence indeed that the world is making formidable strides towards reducing the number of people living in poverty. Together, with more of such progress, We Can End Child Poverty Worldwide.
