Globally, nearly 1 billion children are affected by multidimensional poverty.
This means that almost half of the world’s population of children lack basic necessities such as nutritious food, clean water, a safe home, or even healthcare. This multidimensional poverty robs children of their dignity and creates an increased risk of erosion of their rights. In every society currently, children face the adverse impacts of socioeconomic inequalities and corruption. Climate change and environmental degradation are rampant, and violent conflicts and violence against children are on the rise.
Now, more than ever, communities need to rally together to alleviate these underlying causes of child poverty.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP), marked annually on October 17th, presents a timely opportunity for us all to rally concerted efforts aimed at ending child poverty. It enables individuals and communities to renew commitments to promoting children’s rights and overall well-being.
This year’s IDEP, October 17th, 2022, is guided by the universal theme “Dignity for All in Practice: The Commitments We Make Together for Social Justice, Peace and Planet.”
To commemorate IDEP, Arigatou International—End Child Poverty, together with our partners and many others, will make pledges for action through our ECP@10 Campaign. We will mobilize communities to plant 1 million trees, create safe spaces to listen to children, and meaningfully involve children in actions to alleviate poverty. The campaign will enable us to jointly amplify awareness, relevant advocacy, and community actions empowering children and helping them overcome poverty.
As we begin the countdown to this year’s IDEP, October 17th, 2022, we welcome you to join us in the ECP@10 Campaign, commemorating 10 years of action towards overcoming child poverty.
