World Day of Prayer and Action for Children – 2016

The World Day of Prayer and Action for Children is celebrated on Universal Children’s Day (20 November) by bringing together secular and faith-based organizations to work to end violence against children. Universal Children’s Day, established by the United Nations in 1954, also commemorates the 1989 adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The World Day of Prayer and Action for Children  is a day of reflection and a call to action for the well-being of children around the world reenergising the global commitment  towards Ending Violence against Children ,weaving together the efforts of faith-based and non-governmental organizations with those of governments around the world.

This year’s theme like the previous years, places a focus on Ending Violence against Children. With the current ongoing conflict in Syria, Iraq, South Sudan and around the world, a larger number of the population affected by the war and conflict are children. Their rights have been brutally violated with nearly half of them accounted for as refugees. As stated by Anthony Lake- UNICEF Executive Director,

” each picture, each girl or boy, represents many millions of children in danger – and this demands that our compassion for the individual children we see be matched with action for all children.”
